Bento is on a mission to improve healthcare outcomes and quality of life for low income community members. Over half of all adults in the US have a nutrition related chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease which disproportionately impacts low income community members. Disease management programs, food banks and government assistance programs targeting these vulnerable populations have had some positive effects but health outcomes remain poor. Bento is taking a new approach to engage low income patients and their families to achieve major improvements in their health and wellbeing in a cost effective manner by integrating:

  • Personalized nutrition: to serve as both ‘food-as-medicine’ and ‘food-as-engagement’

  • Health coaching: to achieve member behavioral change and compliance with healthcare action plan

  • Care navigation: to close critical healthcare care gaps

Bento uses nutritious groceries curated by a team of Registered Dietitians and delivered by grocery stores in the community as a catalyst to establish trust and engagement with the healthcare system.

As a covered Medicaid/Medicare service, Bento is rapidly expanding access to millions of eligible at-risk patients through partnerships with state and county health plans and private health insurers.

About The Role & Right Candidate

The Head of HR & People Operations will serve a key leadership role, overseeing the entire Bento employee lifecycle, from attracting and hiring new team members to managing performance, compensation, and retention. This role will report to the Company’s Chief Operating Officer. 

The right candidate has 10+ years experience building the HR/People Ops functions required to grow and scale venture-backed companies. They thrive in the “roll up your sleeves and build it phase” and are excited to guide companies through the growing pains that come from transitioning from an early stage into the high growth phase of scaling. 

The right candidate knows what it takes to deliver great team member experiences because they’ve done it before and are fueled by the opportunity to help Bento define and implement best-in-class HR and People Ops function that unlocks Bento’s ability to achieve its mission.

Responsibilities and Objectives

Departmental Strategy & Team Management

  • Develop and implement a People Operations strategy that enables People Operations to become a major competitive advantage to enable Bento to achieve its mission  

  • Ensure Bento’s people practices align with its overall business goals

  • Define and manage People Operations OKRs to ensure alignment with Bento overall Company OKRs

  • Build out and lead the People Operations team, providing coaching, mentorship, and support

New Employee Recruitment and Onboarding 

  • Design and implement a recruitment process to support the future Company growth, with recommendations for appropriate applicant tracking software. 

  • Serve as point of contact for recruitment efforts 

  • Ensure that the offer process is smooth, transparent and timely  

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve the current Bento employee onboarding experience to ensure that every new team member is set up for success

Employee Development and Performance Management 

  • Develop and implement an employee development program that not only evaluates, measures and improves team member performance, but also supports team member career growth trajectory inside of the Company

  • Implement a career leveling framework that supports employees career development and provides clear expectations for advancement within Bento

  • Implement tools and training methods that support peer to peer and manager feedback and communication

  • Implement and manage an annual employee performance review process

  • Implement and oversee annual employee compensation reviews that are tied to employee and company performance 

  • Ensure the company complies with all relevant HR laws and regulations, including payroll, benefits, and employment practices  

Employee Experience & Team Culture 

  • Create a People Operations function that can serve as a trusted support system for every Bento team member 

  • Support the effective resolution of team member concerns and conflicts

  • Serve as a major Bento stakeholder for building and sustaining a Company culture that fosters Bento values and ensures that Bento is a place where team members feel they can be their best selves 

Candidate Qualifications

  • Proven track record (minimum of 10 years) building and managing People Operations function at high growth startup environment  

  • Proven track record of supporting Company growth from product market fit through high growth scale 

  • Experience rolling out, managing and optimizing large-scale company wide employee initiatives  

  • Experience managing third party recruiters 

  • Exceptional leadership qualities 

  • Exceptional communication skills to engage internal team members

  • Experience and comfort designing best in class benefit packages, career development programs 

  • Ability to analyze and synthesize employee performance and operational data to ensure operational excellence

  • Experience working with fast growing, venture backed tech startup
