What’s changing?
CalOptima, your Medi-Cal health plan in Orange County, has changed the medically tailored food program and as of May 1, there is a new process for getting reauthorized for this benefit.
How does this new process work?
If this is your second authorization with Bento, we will submit a re-authorization on your behalf to be reviewed by a company CalOptima has partnered with, called Foodsmart. Foodsmart will contact you to schedule a free nutritional assessment and determine your eligibility for food.
If you have finished your first two authorizations, please contact our member support team to let them know that you are interested in continuing in the program. We will then submit a reauthorization on your behalf.
When will I hear from Foodsmart?
You can expect to hear from a Foodsmart representative within a few days of submitting your reauthorization. They will be in touch via email, text or phone.
How will Foodsmart determine my eligibility?
Based on your free nutrition assessment, Foodsmart will identify your level of eligibility and determine which of the following three tiers you fall into.
If Foodsmart’s nutrition assessment determines you to be Tier 1, you will receive free nutrition coaching from a Foodsmart Registered Dietitian, but no free food.
If Foodsmart’s nutrition assessment determines you to be Tier 2, you will receive free nutrition coaching from a Foodsmart Registered Dietitian, and a maximum of 12 weeks of free food.
If Foodsmart’s nutrition assessment determines you to be Tier 3, you will receive free nutrition coaching from a Foodsmart Registered Dietitian, and a maximum of 24 weeks of free food.
I’m Tier 2 or Tier 3, how do I sign up for food?
If approved for either of the free food options, Foodsmart will then refer you to Bento or one of the other medically tailored food providers. If you indicate your interest in receiving groceries from Bento, you will have a higher likelihood of being referred back to Bento.
